175,400-ton cooling system, 95% air purification keeps Two Holy Mosques comfortable during Hajj

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th May, 2026) General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque has strengthened advanced operational and technical systems at the Two Holy Mosques during the Hajj 1447 AH season, operating a combined cooling capacity of 175,400 tons alongside high-efficiency air purification systems to ensure pilgrims’ comfort and safety.

According to SPA, Masjid al-Haram is operating one of the world’s largest cooling systems with a total capacity of 155,000 tons distributed between the Al-Shamiyah cooling station with 120,000 tons and Ajyad station with 35,000 tons.

The report said chilled water is cooled to between four and five degrees Celsius before being pumped through an integrated network supplying cool air across the Grand Mosque to maintain temperatures between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius during peak crowd hours.

Authorities added that advanced air purification systems with efficiency reaching 95 percent are operating continuously to improve air quality for worshippers and pilgrims.

At Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, a giant central cooling station located seven kilometers west of the mosque operates through six cooling units, each with a capacity of 3,400 tons, bringing the combined cooling capacity of the Two Holy Mosques to 175,400 tons.

The authority also operates advanced mobility systems, including 224 escalators and 22 elevators at the Grand Mosque, capable of serving more than 200,000 pilgrims per hour, while the Prophet’s Mosque includes 180 escalators and 25 elevators maintained under continuous operational programs.

The report said the Two Holy Mosques are equipped with extensive smart lighting systems, including more than 120,000 lighting units and 6,900 chandeliers at the Grand Mosque, while the Prophet’s Mosque contains over 137,000 LED lighting units managed through smart building systems.

Authorities added that central monitoring and control rooms supervise cooling, lighting, electricity and operational systems in real time using advanced data analysis technologies to improve operational efficiency and ensure uninterrupted services throughout the Hajj season.
