SUKKUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 5th Jun, 2026) The Pir Abdul Qadir Shah Jeelani Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Gambat, has launched a free Total Knee Replacement programme using advanced robotic technology, offering relief to patients suffering from severe knee arthritis who cannot afford the high cost of surgery.
The programme is being carried out under the supervision of Prof Dr Sajjad Ahmad Bhatti, consultant Orthopedic and Arthroplasty Surgeon at GIMS, along with his team.
According to hospital's Media Consultant Jameel Hyder on Friday, the surgeries are being performed with the CUVIS Joint Robotic System, which enables high-precision joint replacement and is among the latest technologies available worldwide.
He said that the initiative is supported by the Government of Sindh, which is covering the entire cost of surgery, medicines, and hospital stay for deserving patients. Dr Sajjad Bhatti said the objective is to make high-end orthopedic care accessible to underprivileged patients who would otherwise be unable to walk due to financial constraints.
“Robotic knee replacement allows for greater accuracy in implant positioning and bone cutting, which leads to better alignment, less post-operative pain, and faster recovery,” Dr Bhatti said.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>He added that most patients are able to stand and walk within a day of surgery, compared to the longer recovery period required in conventional procedures.
Patients seeking the facility have been advised to visit the Orthopedic OPD at GIMS Gambat from 8:00am to 2:00pm, along with recent X-rays and previous medical records. After examination by Dr Sajjad Bhatti and his team, eligible cases will be referred to the hospital’s Social Welfare Department for verification of documents. Once cleared, the surgery will be scheduled free of cost.
Hospital administration confirmed that the facility is open to patients from across Pakistan, though priority is being given to residents of Sindh. For appointments and information, patients have been advised contact GIMS Gambat at 0243-720772 or 0243-640160.
GIMS, located in District Khairpur, has emerged as a major public-sector tertiary care hospital in northern Sindh, providing free specialised treatment in liver transplant, cardiac surgery, and now robotic orthopedic procedures.
