Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, on Wednesday said that the general elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir scheduled for 2026 will be held on time in a free, fair, and transparent manner

MIRPUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 6th May, 2026) Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, on Wednesday said that the general elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir scheduled for 2026 will be held on time in a free, fair, and transparent manner.

Speaking to APP on the sidelines of a reception hosted in his honour by the Kashmir Press Club Mirpur during his first visit to the city after assuming office, the Prime Minister stated that his government is committed to ensuring peaceful and transparent elections for the 53-seat Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

Responding to a question, Rathore said his party would contest the elections independently by fielding candidates in all Constituencies.

However, he added that electoral alliances with like-minded parties could be considered, excluding the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), under traditional seat adjustment arrangements.

On the issue of 12 reserved seats allocated for Pakistan-based Jammu and Kashmir refugees, including those residing in AJK, the Prime Minister said a committee has already been constituted to review the matter. He added that a final decision regarding these seats would be made following the committee’s recommendations.

To another query, the Prime Minister said that despite challenging circumstances, his government has taken significant steps that, according to him, were not undertaken over the past sixty years.
