MIRPUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 1st May, 2026) Azad Jammu and Kashmir observed World Labour Day on Friday with rallies, ceremonies and renewed pledges to safeguard workers’ rights, as labour leaders demanded a significant increase in wages, proposing that minimum pay be aligned with the current market value of 10 grams of gold.

Addressing a large May Day rally in Mirpur on Friday, speakers—primarily representatives of labour organizations—called for immediate steps to improve the living standards of workers through enhanced wages and comprehensive welfare measures. They emphasized that the working class forms the backbone of society and deserves stronger protections and economic support.

Events were held across all ten districts of AJK, including Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, Kotli, Bagh, Rawalakot, and others, where participants paid tribute to the Chicago workers who sacrificed their lives in 1886 for labour rights.

Speakers at various gatherings highlighted the historic significance of the day and reiterated their commitment to continuing the struggle for dignity, fair wages, and better working conditions.

In Mirpur, a central ceremony at the local press club drew large participation, with speakers vowing to uphold the legacy of the Chicago martyrs by intensifying efforts to secure labour rights. They also reaffirmed their resolve to work for the welfare of underprivileged segments of society, while rallies and poster displays across the city echoed demands for wage reforms and broader social protections for workers.
