APHC condemns Ramsoo killing, seeks probe into ‘religion based violence’

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 15th Apr, 2026) The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (Azad Kashmir and Pakistan chapter) on Wednesday strongly condemned the killing of a 25-year-old man, Tanveer Ahmad Chopan, in the Ramsoo area of Ramban district in Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir, alleging that he was targeted on religious grounds while transporting livestock, and called for an immediate, transparent investigation to bring those responsible to justice.

In a statement, APHC (AJK) Information Secretary Mushtaq Ahmad Butt expressed deep sorrow over the incident, terming it “tragic, inhumane and highly condemnable.”

He said the victim lost his life after allegedly being attacked and forced to jump into a local stream while attempting to save himself.

Mr Butt alleged that extremist elements associated with groups such as the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena were involved in the incident, and criticised the criminal silence and negligence of the local administration.

He claimed that the patronage of such elements, coupled with the failure of law enforcement agencies, had contributed to rising religious intolerance and insecurity in the region.

He said targeting individuals based on religion and subjecting them to violence is a grave and unacceptable crime, constituting a blatant violation of human values, international law, and fundamental human rights.

“No individual should be attacked merely based on identity or routine livelihood activity, as such acts are contrary to the principles of any civilised society,” he added.

The APHC leader warned that such incidents not only instil fear among local populations but also pose serious risks to regional peace and stability.

He demanded that all those involved in the incident be subjected to a prompt, impartial, and transparent investigation, and be awarded strict punishment in accordance with the law to prevent recurrence of such acts.

He stressed that symbolic or temporary measures would be insufficient, calling instead for concrete and effective policy action.

Appealing to the international community, including the United Nations and global human rights organisations, Mr Butt urged them to take serious notice of the deteriorating human rights situation in the region and press India to fulfil its international obligations and ensure the protection of civilians.

He warned that failure to prevent such incidents and hold perpetrators accountable could lead to serious and far-reaching consequences, for which the authorities would bear responsibility.

Mr Butt also extended his condolences to the bereaved family of Tanveer Ahmad Chopan, praying for the deceased’s elevated status in the hereafter and for patience for his family.
