Asian Development Bank (ADB) Country Director Xiaoqin Emma Fan called on Balochistan Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan on Thursday

QUETTA, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 7th May, 2026) Asian Development Bank (ADB) Country Director Xiaoqin Emma Fan called on Balochistan Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan on Thursday.

During the meeting, development projects including agriculture, irrigation, IT, schools and Kachhi Canal in the province were discussed in detail.

This meeting is of utmost importance for the economic development and improvement of infrastructure of Balochistan.

The meeting discussed in detail the development of the agricultural sector, modernization of the irrigation system, promotion of Information Technology (IT), Kachhi Canal Project, Washuk Dam and other important issues.

The Chief Secretary said that in a drought-prone area like Balochistan, the improvement of agriculture and water resources is the basis of the economic development of the province.

He demanded technical and financial support from the Asian Development Bank for the rehabilitation of agricultural infrastructure and the introduction of modern technology.

He said that in the irrigation sector, special attention was given to the Kachhi Canal Project, which could prove to be life-changing for the farmers of the province saying that Phase 2 of this project would enable irrigation of millions of acres of land, which could increase crop production.

Similarly, discussions were held on the expansion projects of Washik Dam, which will reduce the risks of floods and increase water storage, which will enable water supply to the people in the respective districts, he said and added that in the IT sector, both sides emphasized the development of digital infrastructure and skill training programs for the youth.

The Country Director of the Asian Development Bank praised the efforts of the Balochistan government.

On this occasion, the Chief Secretary said that the provincial government has enrolled 280,000 children in schools, while the government is starting an adult literacy program and the provincial government is ensuring employment to the people through enterprise development in the province, while also ensuring the supply of solar energy to 27 towns.

The Country Director said on this occasion that in this regard, the bank would discuss with the higher authorities to meet the development needs of the province.

This meeting is a positive step in the path of development of Balochistan which will strengthen international partnership.
