Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood has reportedly retired from acting and directing, bringing an end to a prolific career that spanned more than seven decades and reshaped American cinema, according to comments made by his son, musician Kyle Eastwood.

The confirmation emerged in a recently resurfaced interview with French broadcaster France 3, in which Kyle Eastwood referred to his father as "retired", suggesting the 96-year-old filmmaker has quietly stepped away from both performing and directing after a lifetime in the industry.

"I have a lot of good memories of working with him. Now he's retired, he's 95 years old," Kyle Eastwood said in the interview, conducted prior to his father's 96th birthday on May 31. He added that collaborating with his father across multiple films had been "a great experience".

Although there has been no formal announcement from Clint Eastwood or his representatives, the remarks have been widely interpreted as confirmation that one of Hollywood's most enduring figures has brought his career to a close.

Eastwood's journey began in the mid-1950s with early screen appearances before he rose to international fame in the 1960s through Sergio Leone's Western classics, including 'A Fistful of Dollars' (1964), 'For a Few Dollars More' (1965) and 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' (1966), which cemented his image as the stoic, gun-slinging antihero.

He went on to define an era of American cinema with the 'Dirty Harry' franchise, beginning in 1971, portraying the hard-edged San Francisco detective Harry Callahan across five films including 'Magnum Force' (1973) and 'The Dead Pool' (1988), a role that became synonymous with his screen persona.

Beyond action and Westerns, Eastwood also delivered critically acclaimed performances in films such as 'The Beguiled', 'Escape from Alcatraz', 'Unforgiven' (1992) and 'Gran Torino' (2008), demonstrating a range that extended far beyond his early tough-guy image.

Behind the camera, Eastwood built an equally formidable reputation as a director, debuting with 'Play Misty for Me' in 1971 before going on to helm a string of acclaimed films including 'The Bridges of Madison County', 'Mystic River', 'Million Dollar Baby', 'Letters from Iwo Jima', 'American Sniper' and 'Sully'.

His directorial work earned him four Academy Awards, including Best Director for 'Unforgiven' and 'Million Dollar Baby', alongside multiple Golden Globes, Directors Guild of America Awards and international honours such as an Honorary Cesar, Honorary Golden Lion and Honorary Palme d'Or.

Across his career, Eastwood is credited with more than 70 acting roles and over 40 directing credits, and is also known for guiding multiple actors to Oscar-winning performances, including Gene Hackman, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman.

If confirmed, Eastwood's final directorial effort would be the 2024 courtroom drama 'Juror #2', while his last on-screen appearance came in 2021 with 'Cry Macho', a film he also directed.
