At UN, Pakistan calls for international support to Syria as it navigates stability

UNITED NATIONS, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Jul, 2026) Commending Syria’s leaders for steering the country towards stability, Pakistan has called on the international community to "back this process by respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

"The new leadership has demonstrated determination in steering the nation toward stability, rebuilding national institutions and laying the foundations for a prosperous future," Syed Tareq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, told the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

Speaking in a debate on the situation in Syria, he said that Syrian people now have an opportunity to "turn the page,"after years of conflict.

According to UN reports, Syria has undergone major political and social shifts since a popular uprising ousted President Al-Assad in late 2024. The country’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has engaged more closely with the international community and promised accountability for past atrocity crimes, while undertaking significant government reforms.

In his remarks, SAPM Fatemi said the lifting of sanctions was a "major step" toward Syria's economic recovery and reintegration, and emphasized that these measures must now translate into tangible improvements.

On the "fragile" security situation, he said recent incidents underscore the threats posed by Da’esh, foreign terrorist fighters and other terrorist groups.

The Special Assistant reaffirmed the need for sustained and coordinated counter-terrorism efforts, consistent with international law.

“The pursuit of transitional justice through a credible process grounded in truth, accountability and reconciliation will be essential to addressing the past and forging lasting national cohesion,” Fatemi insisted.

He also denounced the illegal occupation of Syrian territory, including the Golan Heights, as a violation of international law, condemning Israel’s violation of resolutions 338 (1973) and 497 (1981), and the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement between Israel and Syria – all of which must be fully implemented.

"It is important that Syria is not drawn into a wider regional turmoil that could undermine its stability, reconstruction, economic recovery and the well-being of its people," Fatemi added.

He also called for sustained international support for addressing the continuing humanitarian situation in Syria.
