Senior officials, policymakers, and civil society representatives gathered in Quetta to reaffirm their commitment to women’s empowerment, gender equality, and protection of women’s rights, marking initiatives aligned with International Women’s Day
QUETTA, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 27th Mar, 2026) Senior officials, policymakers, and civil society representatives gathered in Quetta to reaffirm their commitment to women’s empowerment, gender equality, and protection of women’s rights, marking initiatives aligned with International Women’s Day.
At a ceremony organized under the police department for the protection of women, children, and juveniles, Provincial Secretary for Women Development Saira Atta said the provincial government, under the directives of Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, is actively working to eliminate gender discrimination and create a safe, dignified environment for women.
She emphasized that women are being provided opportunities in education, employment, and skills development to thrive as equal members of society, said a news release.
Saira Atta stressed that women’s rights must translate into concrete actions, not just speeches. Referring to the Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act (2016), she noted that institutions are required to establish inquiry committees, enforce anti-harassment policies, and raise awareness to ensure safe working environments.
Despite legislative progress, Saira Atta acknowledged that violence against women including domestic abuse and harassment remains a serious issue.
She called for stronger implementation of laws, greater investment in education and healthcare, and inclusion of women in decision-making processes.
The event was attended by key officials including Provincial Ombudsperson Tahira Baloch, DIG Headquarters Hassan Asad Alvi, and representatives from Aurat Foundation, UN Women, and UNFPA. Civil society groups highlighted awareness campaigns, youth engagement programs, and community initiatives to end gender-based violence.
Hassan Asad Alvi noted that female officers are now serving in roles such as complaint officers, clerical staff, and computer operators across police stations. These measures have improved responses to domestic violence cases and increased public trust in law enforcement.
Tahira Baloch stressed that many women, especially in rural areas, still lack access to basic services. She emphasized that societal attitudes must evolve to achieve true gender equality: “Until women are recognized as equal citizens, meaningful progress will remain out of reach.”
Speakers collectively pledged to continue collaboration between government and civil society to empower women, ensure justice, and eliminate violence, concluding the ceremony with a renewed vow to build a safer and more inclusive Balochistan.
