BISP, WFP join hands to scale up maternal and child nutrition drive

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 5th May, 2026) In a renewed push to tackle malnutrition and improve maternal and child health outcomes among vulnerable families, Chairperson Rubina Khalid held a high-level meeting with Coco Ushiyama, Country Director of the World Food

Programme at BISP Headquarters on Tuesday.

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration under the Benazir Nashonuma Programme, with both sides emphasizing urgent measures to improve nutrition, immunization coverage, and health awareness among women beneficiaries and their children.

Speaking on the occasion, Senator Rubina Khalid underscored the need to enhance interventions aimed at

addressing maternal and child health challenges.

She highlighted immunization as a critical pillar of child well-being and noted that making immunization certificates mandatory for BISP registration marks a significant step toward safeguarding children health.

She also stressed the importance of educating mothers about the nutritional value of locally available household food to support children

physical and cognitive development.

Coco Ushiyama reaffirmed the World Food Programme’s commitment to deepening its partnership with BISP and expressed readiness to collaborate on effective planning and execution of future initiatives in the health and

nutrition sector.

The two sides also reviewed proposals to expand the outreach of the Benazir Nashonuma Programme, improve access for deserving women, and enhance service delivery through modern digital systems.

They agreed on adopting and adapting successful international models to strengthen programme impact in Pakistan.

Dr. Asim Ejaz, Director General NSER/CCT, was also present during the meeting.
