The govt says decision followed a comprehensive review of bilateral relations and was based on what it described as repeated violations of the principles of mutual respect, national sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs
OUAGADOUGOU: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-June 27th, 2026) Burkina Faso's military government on Saturday announced the immediate termination of diplomatic relations with France, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries.
In an official statement, the government said the decision followed a comprehensive review of bilateral relations and was based on what it described as repeated violations of the principles of mutual respect, national sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.
The authorities accused France of pursuing "neo-colonial ambitions", interfering in Burkina Faso's domestic affairs and supporting groups allegedly involved in destabilising the country and the wider Sahel region.
Despite ending diplomatic ties, the government stressed that the decision applies only to official state relations and does not affect the longstanding historical, cultural and social bonds between the peoples of Burkina Faso and France.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>The authorities also called on citizens to continue treating French nationals and all foreign residents with respect and in accordance with the country's laws.
France rejected the allegations as baseless and expressed regret over the decision. French officials said Paris was assessing the situation and would consider appropriate diplomatic measures in response.
The announcement marks another setback in relations between France and several military-led governments in West Africa, where concerns over sovereignty and foreign influence have increasingly strained long-standing diplomatic partnerships.
