Canal breach in Dera Nawab damages crops over several acres

BAHAWALPUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 8th May, 2026) A breach in a canal in the Dera Nawab area damaged standing crops spread over several acres,including maize and other seasonal crops,officials said on Friday.

According to Punjab Emergency Service Rescue 1122, a major breach occurred in the embankment of a canal flowing from Dera Nawab to Gulab, posing a threat to nearby residential settlements and infrastructure.

Officials said the control room immediately dispatched a rescue team after receiving information about the incident. The breach estimated to be around 10 to 12 feet wide caused a rapid flow of water towards populated areas, triggering concerns of flooding.

Rescue officials added that the Irrigation Department was informed without delay,while an excavator was also arranged to expedite emergency repair work.

Subsequently,the Irrigation Department sub-engineer along with field staff reached the site and initiated repair work on the breached embankment.

Continuous efforts by the teams helped reduce the water flow following which the breach was successfully sealed and the situation brought under control.
