The city’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 143, placing it in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category

LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 8th Apr, 2026) The city’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 143, placing it in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category. This level of pollution poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

At the same time, the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was measured at 10.5 times higher than the annual guideline value recommended by the World Health Organization. Such elevated levels of PM2.5 are a serious concern, as these microscopic particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, leading to a range of health issues including breathing difficulties, aggravated asthma, reduced lung function, and an increased risk of heart disease.

Environmental experts warn that prolonged exposure to this level of pollution can have long-term consequences for public health. They advise residents, especially those in sensitive groups, to limit outdoor activities, wear protective masks when necessary, and take precautionary measures to reduce exposure until air quality improves.
