LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 2nd May, 2026) Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the design of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System, directing authorities concerned to ensure comprehensive connectivity across the city through an integrated feeder bus network.

Chairing a meeting to review the project here on Saturday, the chief minister was briefed in detail on the proposed plan. She instructed that all areas of Gujranwala be linked with the metro train service via feeder buses to facilitate seamless travel for commuters.

To improve traffic flow and urban mobility, it was decided to construct two tunnel sections in the project, while in-principle approval was granted for 17 to 19 kilometres of the transit line to run underground.

The meeting also approved the installation of solar systems at all stations and depots, reflecting a shift towards sustainable and energy-efficient infrastructure.

According to the briefing, the mass transit system will have the capacity to serve up to 2.6 million passengers. The 31.5-kilometre-long route will extend from Gakhar to Aimanabad, with a targeted completion timeline of 12 months.

A total of 24 stations, including two underground stations, will be constructed along the corridor. Depots are planned at Gharjakh, Chand Da Qila and Gondlanwala to support operational efficiency.

Additionally, a 62-kilometre drainage system will be developed along both sides of the transit corridor, while a dedicated command and control centre will be established to monitor and manage operations.

The CM said the Gujranwala Mass Transit System would transform the city’s transport culture and provide a modern, efficient commuting facility to residents.
