Comprehensive plan devised to boost cotton production in Bahawalpur

BAHAWALPUR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 1st Apr, 2026) A key meeting of the District Cotton Committee was held under the chairpersonship of Additional

Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Shagufta Jabeen at the Committee Room of the Deputy

Commissioner’s Office, where a comprehensive strategy was devised to ensure timely sowing

of the upcoming cotton crop, achieve production targets, and address farmers’ concerns

across the district.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Director Agriculture Bahawalpur Hafiz Muhammad Shafiq,

Director Agriculture Crop Reporting, Director Pest Warning, Assistant Directors of the Agriculture (Extension)

Department, officials from the Irrigation Department and Federal Seed Certification, farmer representatives

from across the district and representatives and dealers of fertilizer, seed, and agrochemical companies.

Deputy Director Agriculture Hafiz Muhammad Shafiq, while briefing the participants, stated that an extensive

awareness and training campaign is underway to promote cotton cultivation in the district.

He shared that, in two phases so far, 714 villages have been covered, and more than 40,000 farmers have

been trained in modern agricultural practices, including the use of certified seeds, balanced fertilizers,

and effective pest management.

He further informed that additional guidance programs and Numberdar conventions will be organized at the tehsil and center levels to support farmers with updated knowledge and best practices.

The meeting was also informed that effective measures are being taken in collaboration with the private sector to ensure the timely availability of quality seeds. Adequate stocks of urea, DAP, and other fertilizers are available with dealers and warehouses to prevent any shortages during the sowing season. A detailed discussion was held regarding the availability of canal water.
