LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 5th Apr, 2026) Pakistan can save six billion litres of petrol valued US$3 billion annually by converting all motorcycles into electric bikes, besides saving precious foreign exchange.
Convener of FPCCI Regional Committee on food, Shahid Imran, stated this while talking to Sheikhupra traders delegation led by Chaudhry Muhammad Afzal here on Sunday.
He said that 12 billion litres of petrol is consumed annually in Pakistan of which 50 per cent by two wheelers, while 20 percent of our import bill is dedicated exclusively to petroleum products.
The FPCCI convener said, timely investment in electric mobility could pave the way for economic stability, energy efficiency, and a cleaner environment for future generations.
He said, motorcycles are the most widely used mode of transport in Pakistan, especially among the middle and lower-income groups.
Transitioning to electric bikes would not only ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves but also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and urban air pollution, he added.
Shahid Imran urged the government to introduce supportive policies, including subsidies, tax incentives, and infrastructure development such as charging stations, to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles.
He highlighted the importance of local manufacturing and technological innovation to make electric bikes affordable and accessible. He said government should also clamp down complete ban on registration of new petrol/CNG bike as our neighbour has also successfully banned with effect from August next by enacting law with some financial subsidy.
