Board is considering a structured financial package aimed at encouraging senior players to prioritise red-ball cricket, particularly in the Test format, report local media
MELBOURNE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-May 7th, 2026) Cricket Australia is reportedly exploring long-term contractual agreements for its leading players in an effort to ensure their continued commitment to Test cricket, as global T20 leagues increasingly compete for top talent.
Australian media reported that the board is considering a structured financial package aimed at encouraging senior players to prioritise red-ball cricket, particularly in the Test format.
Under the proposed plan, captain Pat Cummins could be offered a deal worth around 12 million Australian dollars, designed to secure his availability for Test cricket through to 2029. Reports suggest the arrangement would include an annual package of approximately 4 million Australian Dollars over a three-year period.
The initiative is understood to be part of Cricket Australia’s broader strategy to retain its core players amid growing franchise commitments worldwide.
The discussions are also ongoing with other key players, including Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, with similar three-year contract models reportedly under consideration.
Both players have been consistent performers across formats and are seen as central to Australia’s future plans.
Cricket Australia’s Head of Cricket, James Allsopp, has said that elite players should be rewarded competitively, noting their long-standing contributions across all formats of international cricket.
He also acknowledged the increasing challenge of balancing international duties with the expanding global T20 Calendar, which continues to attract top players with lucrative opportunities.
The move comes as Australia prepares for a demanding schedule of 21 Test matches over the next year, making workload management and squad stability a key priority for selectors.
The officials believe that securing long-term agreements with senior players could help maintain continuity in the Test side while ensuring Australia remains competitive across all formats of the game.
