DERA ISMAIL KHAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Feb, 2026) A thought-provoking debate themed “Responsible Role of Media in National Development” was held here at the City Campus of Gomal University under the auspices of the 'Dosti Peshawar Literature Festival-Fifth Edition, Dera Chapter.
The event was organized under the supervision of Professor Dr. Ehsan Ullah Danish, Director of Gomal University Tank Campus wherein Senior journalist Muhammad Rehan moderated the session, while the panel featured prominent media professionals including Muhammad Irfan Mughal, Dr. Muhammad Fazal-ur-Rehman, and senior journalist and columnist Abul Moazzam Turabi.
The speakers shared their insights on the responsibilities and challenges faced by the media and responded to questions from students.
The participants emphasized that media serves as the fourth pillar of the state and plays a vital role in promoting national development, transparency, and accountability. They stressed that responsible journalism is essential for bringing positive change in society. While highlighting corruption, maladministration, and public issues remains a fundamental duty of the media, the speakers noted that development projects and positive initiatives should also receive due coverage to foster hope and public confidence.
Expressing concern over the growing trend of fake news and sensationalism in the age of social media, the panelists warned that the race for ratings and online views should not compromise journalistic ethics.
They underscored the importance of verification, research, and balanced reporting before publishing any news.
The discussion also focused on constructive journalism and the concept of solution-oriented reporting, encouraging media outlets to present possible solutions alongside highlighting problems. According to the speakers, media can contribute positively to policymaking by shaping informed public opinion.
The panel further discussed challenges faced by journalists in the field, including access to information and the need for professional training.
The participants agreed that maintaining a balance between freedom of expression and national interest is crucial in the current environment. They also deliberated on countering anti-state propaganda, addressing narrative conflicts, and the responsibilities of youth and educational institutions in contemporary circumstances.
The speakers appreciated the efforts of Professor Dr. Ehsan Ullah Danish and his team for organizing the literary event and termed such initiatives essential for fostering critical thinking and responsible dialogue among students.
