LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 10th Jun, 2026) An Enforcement Mechanism Review Committee on Wednesday decided to launch a crackdown against high-polluting industrial units operating in residential and densely populated areas of Lahore to curb environmental, industrial and municipal pollution.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Secretary Industries Umar Cheema and Commissioner Lahore Marryam Khan. The commissioner was also appointed convener of the enforcement review committee.
During the meeting, officials of the Environment Protection Department informed participants that environmental No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) had not been issued to high-polluting industrial units functioning in residential areas.
Commissioner Marryam Khan directed the Environment Protection Department to provide a complete list of industries operating in residential localities and instructed the district administration to begin enforcement action within 24 hours.
She said joint teams comprising the district administration, police, pera-force and other relevant departments would conduct the operation.

The commissioner said as many as 5,414 small and large industrial units were operating in residential areas of Lahore. In the first phase, authorities would proceed against 414 high-polluting industrial units, while action against other industrial establishments would be carried out in phases.
She said directions issued by the Punjab government regarding environmental compliance would be implemented in letter and spirit.
The meeting was attended by Director General Lahore Development Authority Tahir Farooq, Deputy Commissioner Lahore Muhammad Ali Ijaz, DIG Operations Dr Faisal Kamran, Director General Environment Imran Hamid Sheikh, CBD Punjab CEO Imran Amin and representatives of LESCO, Local Government Department and other concerned agencies.
