LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th May, 2026) The Punjab Agriculture department has advised the cotton growers to preferably cultivate heat-tolerant varieties to protect crop from extreme temperatures.
A spokesman for the department said here on Sunday that in view of the heat wave, deep plowing should be carried out before sowing cotton, and double irrigation should be applied so that moisture reserves in the soil increase, the land becomes softer and the crop can better withstand heat stress.
He stated that in the case of seasonal or late-sown cotton cultivation, irrigation should be carried out at intervals of three days to reduce the effects of heat.
He said, "After assessing the crop’s water requirement, if there is a shortage of water, irrigation should preferably be done in the evening or at night.

Instead of giving a large amount of water at one time, light irrigation should be carried out at intervals so that the roots can absorb nutrients easily and breathe properly, he added.
The spokesman further stated that for better results, four weekly sprays of a 2% potassium nitrate solution should be started from the flowering stage. Furthermore, to protect the crop from bollworm attacks, it is recommended to spray bio-stimulants such as amino acids and other growth-enhancing compounds, he said and added that these not only help reduce bollworm infestation but also improve the overall growth and development of the plant.
