The proposal was reportedly put forward by US presidential envoy Paolo Zampolli, who suggested that Italy could be included in place of Iran given the current global situation. The idea was ultimately rejected by FIFA officials.

A report by a British media outlet claimed that the concerns had surfaced over Iran’s participation due to ongoing diplomatic tensions. However, FIFA clarified that no such alteration to the tournament lineup is under consideration.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will take part in the 2026 World Cup as planned.

The suggestion also drew strong reaction from Iranian authorities, with the Iranian embassy condemning it as evidence of “moral bankruptcy” on the part of the United States.
