FIFA suspends Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón for one World Cup match

Almirón was found to have violated Article 14.1(b) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

MIAMI: Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almirón has been suspended for one match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a disciplinary incident during his team’s group-stage victory over Turkey, FIFA announced.

According to FIFA, Almirón was found to have violated Article 14.1(b) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code during Paraguay’s match against Turkey on June 19. The suspension will take effect in Paraguay’s next World Cup fixture and cannot be appealed.

The incident occurred late in the first half when Almirón became involved in a confrontation with Turkish defender Merih Demiral.

During the exchange, Almirón covered his mouth with his hand while speaking, prompting match officials to issue a red card under recently introduced regulations.

FIFA’s updated rules prohibit players from covering their mouths during on-field disputes or conversations, citing concerns that the gesture may be used to conceal inappropriate remarks or evade scrutiny.

Paraguay went on to secure a 1-0 victory despite Almirón’s dismissal, but the midfielder will now miss the team’s next World Cup match due to the suspension.

FIFA said its disciplinary decision is final and not subject to appeal.
