Free, responsible journalism pillar of strong democracy; says Shafi Jan

PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd May, 2026) Adviser to the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Information, Shafi Jan in his remarks on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day on Sunday said free and responsible journalism is a fundamental pillar of a strong democratic society.

He emphasized that journalism not only raised public awareness but also ensured accountability within the government system. He added that access to reliable information, promotion of dialogue and restoration of public trust were essential roles played by the media.

Highlighting the importance of journalism, Shafi Jan said that a free and responsible press was vital for peace, economic stability, sustainable development and the protection of human rights.

Discussing current challenges, he noted that while the speed of information dissemination had increased, threats such as fake news, propaganda and the misuse of artificial intelligence had also grown, posing serious challenges to journalism.

He expressed concern that press freedom was under pressure worldwide, while journalists faced security risks and economic difficulties that require immediate attention.

Shafi Jan reaffirmed that the provincial government was committed to ensuring the safety of journalists, promoting freedom of expression and protecting professional rights. He also paid tribute to journalists who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
