Karachi is grappling with a worsening energy crisis as Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) rolls out a revised gas supply schedule, leaving thousands of households struggling with limited access for cooking and daily use.
New Gas Supply Timings Announced
As per the new schedule gas will be supplied in three time slots:
- Morning: 5:00 AM – 9:00 AM
- Midday: 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM
- Evening: 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM
During the hours outside these, supply will be suspended, leading to more than 10 hours of load-shedding in most areas of the city every day.
Major Areas Affected
The load-shedding has affected a number of high density neighborhoods which include:
- North Karachi
- Malir
- Orangi Town
- Gulshan-e-Iqbal
- North Nazimabad
People living in such regions complain of extreme interference in their everyday lives, especially when it comes to preparing meals, which they are labeling a cold kitchen crisis.
Households Struggle Amid Prolonged Outages
Families are increasingly struggling to cope with cooking schedules as gas is unavailable over long periods. With increasing inflation, many families have resorted to using other alternatives, including LPG cylinders and electric appliances, which have increased their financial burden.
It is especially an issue among working people and students, whose small supply windows often conflict with office and school hours.
Regional Factors Worsening the Crisis
According to the energy experts, the current crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a major source of world energy, might be a contributing factor to the supply shortage, further exacerbating the crisis in the largest city of Pakistan.
SSGC Urges Citizens to Plan Ahead
SSGC has advised residents to adjust their daily routines according to the new schedule and conserve gas wherever possible. Authorities emphasize that the measures are necessary to manage limited resources during peak demand.
Tough Weeks Ahead
With no immediate relief in sight, Karachiites may have to brace for continued disruptions in the coming weeks. The current situation highlights the city’s growing energy challenges and the urgent need for long-term solutions.
