CHITRAL, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Jun, 2026) Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) clinched the title of the Shandur Polo Festival 2026 on Saturday, defeating Chitral 6-5 in a thrilling final at the historic Shandur Polo Ground, renowned as the world’s highest polo field.
In a closely contested match, Chitral dominated much of the first half and held a 5-4 advantage through an impressive attacking performance.
However, Gilgit-Baltistan mounted a remarkable comeback in the latter stages, scoring two decisive goals to secure a narrow one-goal victory and lift the championship trophy.
The triumph marked a significant milestone for GB, ending Chitral’s 13-year dominance of the prestigious tournament and adding a new chapter to the long-standing rivalry between the two mountain regions.
The final match was formally inaugurated by Corps Commander Peshawar Lieutenant General Umar Ahmed Bukhari, who attended as chief guest and commenced the contest by tossing the ceremonial ball.

The festival was organized with the support of the Pakistan Army, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority, Chitral Scouts, and the local administration.
Among the dignitaries present at the final were Major General Rao Imran, Colonel Arsalan, Masood Ahmed, Saadat Hassan, Shahid Khan, and Muhammad Imran.
Thousands of visitors from across Pakistan and abroad attended the festival, further strengthening its reputation as one of the country’s premier cultural and sporting events.
The annual spectacle continues to promote tourism while showcasing the rich cultural heritage and traditions of Pakistan’s northern regions.
