Prime Minister Anthony Albanese terms appointment a landmark development, noting that it marks first time in the 125-year history of the Australian Army that a woman will lead the force

SYDNEY: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-April 13rd, 2026) Australia on Monday announced a major leadership reshuffle in its defence forces, naming a woman to head the army for the first time in the country’s history.

Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, currently serving as chief of joint capabilities, has been appointed as the new chief of army and will assume charge in July. She will succeed Lieutenant General Simon Stuart in the role.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese termed the appointment a landmark development, noting that it marks the first time in the 125-year history of the Australian Army that a woman will lead the force.

Defence Minister Richard Marles also described the decision as a historic milestone, highlighting its importance for gender representation in the military. He said Coyle’s elevation would serve as an inspiration for women currently serving in the armed forces as well as those considering a future in defence.

Coyle, 55, joined the military in 1987 and has held several senior command positions during her career. According to the officials, she will be the first woman to lead any branch of Australia’s armed forces.

Her appointment comes at a time when the military is working to increase female participation amid ongoing concerns over gender inequality. Women currently account for about 21 per cent of personnel in the Australian Defence Force and hold around 18.5 per cent of senior leadership roles. The force has set a target of raising overall female representation to 25 per cent by 2030.

The issue of gender balance has gained prominence following allegations of widespread harassment and discrimination within the ranks. In October last year, a class action lawsuit was filed accusing the military of failing to protect female personnel from systemic abuse.

As part of the broader leadership changes, the government also named Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, the current Navy chief, as the next head of the defence force. He would replace Admiral David Johnston.

Meanwhile, Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley, who is currently serving as deputy chief of Navy, will take over as the new head of the naval branch.
