GIMS gambat team performs two successful PTMC procedures back-to-back

SUKKUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Jul, 2026) A team of Interventional Cardiologists at the Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Gambat, successfully performed two consecutive Percutaneous Transvenous Mitral Commissurotomy (PTMC) / Valvotomy procedures.

The procedures, involving balloon dilatation to open a narrowed mitral valve, were performed without any surgical cut, general anesthesia, or prolonged hospital stay. Both patients are stable and recovering well.

Talking to the media on Wednesday, Interventional Cardiologist at GIMS Cardiac Centre, Dr. Niaz Hussain Abbasi, who led the team, said that PTMC is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedure for patients suffering from mitral valve stenosis, mostly caused by rheumatic heart disease.

He said that through this technique, the narrowed valve is opened with the help of a balloon catheter, avoiding open-heart surgery, reducing risk, cost and recovery time.

Dr. Abbasi said that the availability of advanced imaging-guided technologies and a fully equipped Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the GIMS Cardiac Centre has made such high-end interventions possible in northern Sindh.
