Govt cracks down on illegal seed promotion on social media

MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Feb, 2026) The Punjab Agriculture Department has taken strict notice of the growing trend of promoting and selling unapproved varieties of cotton, rice, and other crop seeds on social media platforms, and has initiated effective enforcement measures to curb the practice.

According to a spokesperson for the department, the advertisement and sale of unapproved crop varieties is not only a legal violation but can also severely affect per-acre yield and overall crop productivity. Officials warned that misleading promotional campaigns on social media are deceiving farmers and exposing them to potential financial losses.

The spokesperson emphasized that any propaganda encouraging the purchase of unapproved seeds misguides growers and undermines agricultural standards. The department further stated that crops shown in promotional videos or images related to such campaigns may be destroyed as part of enforcement action.

Authorities also announced that individuals involved in the promotion or marketing of unapproved seed varieties through digital platforms will face legal action under cyber laws. The department reiterated its commitment to protecting farmers’ interests and ensuring the use of approved, high-quality seed varieties across the province.
