Under new regulation, each captain can submit two different team combinations to match referee before toss
LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-March 27th, 2026) The opening match of the 11th edition of HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 introduced new playing XI rule, adding an interesting twist to the toss procedure.
Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hyderabad Kingsmen captain Marnus Labuschagne appeared on the field with two separate team sheets each. Following the toss, both captains finalized their playing XI from the submitted combinations, as permitted under PSL’s updated rules.
Under the new regulation, each captain can submit two different team combinations to the match referee before the toss. After the toss, selecting one final XI becomes mandatory, and no changes can be made without the opposing captain’s approval.
This rule is particularly designed for night matches, where dew can affect gameplay. In the second innings, wet conditions often create challenges for spinners, influencing team strategies. The new system allows teams to maintain better balance, enabling the side batting first to include an extra fast bowler, while the side batting second can strengthen its batting lineup.
However, in the season’s first match, dew had minimal impact due to the weather conditions. The rule is expected to play a key role in upcoming matches, helping teams adapt their strategies according to conditions.
