Health authorities review gastro prevention measures in Bahawalpur

BAHAWALPUR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Apr, 2026) A high-level meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Syed Hassan Raza to review preventive and control measures against gastroenteritis and ensure their effective implementation across the district,here on Monday.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the district administration and health department, including Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dr. Ayesha Khan, Chief Executive Officer District Health Authority Dr. Zeeshan Rauf, Assistant Commissioners Khalil Ahmed and Hamza Ihtesham, and Medical Superintendent Sadiq Abbasi Hospital Dr. Hamid Khan, among others.

During the briefing, CEO Health Dr. Zeeshan Rauf recommended the imposition of Section 144 in view of public health concerns, proposing a ban on the open sale of cut fruits as well as substandard and unhygienic locally prepared beverages being sold near schools and bus stands.

The measures aim to safeguard citizens, particularly students, from unsafe food items and ensure strict enforcement of hygiene standards.

The meeting reviewed arrangements for timely diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gastroenteritis cases across the district.

Officials informed participants that special instructions had been issued to all government hospitals and basic health units for prompt reporting of patients.

It was further informed that adequate stocks of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), essential medicines and IV fluids have been ensured to deal with any emergency situation. The District Disease Surveillance and Response Unit will monitor the situation on a daily basis, while regular oversight of clean drinking water supply and chlorination will also continue.

Participants also decided to strengthen field teams and rapid response units, and to accelerate efforts for improved sanitation and drainage at the union council level.

Deputy Commissioner Syed Hassan Raza directed all departments to ensure close coordination and immediate reporting of suspected cases. He also called for intensified public awareness campaigns and instructed schools to ensure regular handwashing practices among children.

At the conclusion of the meeting, officials were directed to remain fully prepared to handle any emergency situation and ensure effective utilization of available resources.
