Two to three changes are expected for important group-stage fixture, with discussions under way to test bench strength by resting some senior players
LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-Feb 16th, 2026) Pakistan’s team management is considering significant changes to the playing XI ahead of the crucial ICC tournament match against Namibia, sources said on Sunday.
The insiders said that two to three changes are expected for the important group-stage fixture, with discussions under way to test bench strength by resting some senior players.
The match carries immense importance for Pakistan’s chances of progressing to the Super Eight stage. Sources indicated that a defeat against Namibia could seriously dent the team’s qualification prospects. However, if the match is washed out due to rain, Pakistan would earn one point, which could keep their hopes of advancing alive depending on other results.
The potential reshuffle comes in the wake of Pakistan’s defeat to India, after which former cricketers openly criticised the team’s performance. Some ex-players also suggested dropping senior members of the squad, including Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shadab Khan.
Sources revealed that Shaheen Afridi may be rested, with Salman Mirza being considered as his replacement. Fakhar Zaman is likely to be drafted in place of Babar Azam, while Naseem Shah could replace either Shadab Khan or Mohammad Nawaz in the playing XI.
The final line-up will be announced prior to the toss. The team management is currently engaged in consultations to ensure a balanced combination for what is being viewed as a must-win encounter.
