KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Feb, 2026) Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Javed Alam Odho was informed during a high-level meeting that only 13 out of 33 extortion complaints received since January 1 were found to be genuine, with most cases already resolved.
The meeting, held at the Central Police Office Karachi, reviewed the overall law-enforcement response to extortion and street crime in Karachi, according to a news release on Monday.
Officials briefed the participants that 12 of the verified extortion cases had been resolved, while one case remains under investigation. Police have arrested seven suspects in connection with these cases, while three accused persons died during separate proceedings.
The meeting was attended in person by Additional IGPs Karachi, CTD and Special Branch, along with DIGPs Headquarters and other senior officers, while zonal DIGPs, DIGP CIA, district SSPs and SPs Investigation joined via video link.
During a detailed briefing, the AIGP Operations presented police performance data regarding action taken against extortion networks and street crime since the start of the year.
Additional IGP Karachi Azad Khan informed the meeting that Karachi Police remains in continuous coordination with the business community, adding that traders are regularly updated on progress made against extortion complaints. He said district officers have been directed to adopt a coordinated strategy to curb street crime.
Addressing the participants, the IGP Sindh ordered officers to further intensify action against extortionists and street criminals, stressing that police performance must earn public confidence and appreciation from the business community.
He directed DIGPs and SSPs to maintain regular engagement with traders, ensure prompt registration of extortion cases, and take immediate legal action on complaints. He emphasized that policing measures must effectively reduce street crime and violent incidents across the city.
In view of the upcoming Ramadan, the IGP instructed officers to increase snap checking and general hold-up operations, deploy the Shaheen Force under a coordinated patrolling plan, and prepare comprehensive contingency strategies to maintain law and order during the holy month.
