LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 1st May, 2026) International Labour Day was observed across the country on Friday with a renewed commitment to safeguarding workers’ rights, as rallies and demonstrations were organised by trade unions, labour organisations and civil society groups.
The day is marked globally to recognise the struggles of workers and to highlight the importance of fair wages, safe working conditions and social protection.
The United Nations observes International Labour Day (May 1, 2026) by focusing on the dignity of labor, promoting safe working environments, ensuring fair wages, and advancing social justice for workers worldwide.
The 2026 message emphasizes transitioning from political commitment to actionable, measurable outcomes, particularly in creating a more equitable, inclusive, and green economy.
Activist, General Secretary 'Bonded Labour Liberation Front Pakistan' (BLLF) Syeda Ghulam Fatima, while talking to APP highlighted the importance and need to equip labourers and youth with modern techniques and skills to meet the demands of a digital and rapidly evolving job market. She stressed the need for much needed collaboration among labour departments, private sector entities, learning and civil society to develop a comprehensive framework for skills development.
She said that this day reminds the productive struggle waged by workers around the world for their rights and dignity. "On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to their empowerment, safe working conditions, fair wages and social protection," she underlined.
It may be mentioned here that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz in her message has paid tribute to the services of workers, laborers and miners on the occasion of International Workers’ Day.
The Punjab Chief Minister said that workers around the world are worthy of respect and their role is fundamental in the development of the country. While saluting the greatness of workers, miners and laborers, she appreciated industrial services and said that their hard work strengthens the economy.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif especially paid tribute to those working women who are becoming the economic support of their families and are fulfilling their responsibilities despite difficult circumstances.
