Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Rail Project Gets Major Boost From Pakistan and Iran

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Iran have agreed to strengthen railway cooperation, with a special focus on reviving the ambitious Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul (ITI) freight train project.

Regional trade and transport routes are increasingly in focus worldwide due to the US-Israel war on Iran. The conflict has disrupted key trade routes via sea, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, shedding light on the importance of commercial transactions via land routes.

During the meeting, both countries discussed repairs to old infrastructure, better security arrangements, and ways to run smooth operations. Pakistan highlighted the challenges it faces in the railway sector due to financial constraints, but showed strong commitment to the project.

Pakistan and Iran share a 900-kilometer border, prompting both nations to frequently explore cooperation in trade. Abbasi met Moghadam in Islamabad to discuss bilateral relations, railway cooperation, Pakistan’s Press Information Department (PID) said in a statement.

This agreement is seen as a positive development that can open new trade opportunities for Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey.
