Starting Saturday, Karachi residents will face a significant water shortage as the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) begins critical technical work at the Dhabeji Pumping Station. The 48-hour suspension aims to integrate a new transmission line, modernizing the city’s aging water supply network under a World Bank-funded project.

To connect the new Main Line No. 5 to the existing system, engineers will shut down nine major pumps from Saturday noon until Monday.

This upgrade means a massive daily shortfall of 250 million gallons (MGD). While the temporary Karachi water supply suspension is a headache, the Water Corporation spokesperson confirms this step is vital to stabilize pressure and prevent the frequent pipeline bursts we’ve seen lately.

Karachi Water Supply Suspended in These Affected Areas

If you live in these localities, fill your tanks now:

  • North Karachi and Surjani Town
  • Scheme 33 and Gulistan-e-Johar
  • Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Saddar
  • Chanesar Town (formerly Chiniot Town)

The project specifically targets the Dhabeji Pumping Station infrastructure. While seven pumps should return to service by Monday evening, two will remain offline for an additional five days for technical finishing. Crucially, the Nipa, Safoora, and Sakhi Hasan hydrants will also close during this window, so private tanker prices might spike.

Stay ahead of the water shortage in Karachi by conserving your current supply. This short-term outage is the price for a more resilient Karachi water supply system in the long run.
