PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Apr, 2026) The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly here on Monday unanimously passed a resolution supporting the Islamabad peace talks between US and Iran.
The resolution emphasized that peace, stability, and regional cooperation were essential for long-term security and development.
Pakistan Peoples Party parliamentary leader Ahmad Kundi said that Pakistan played an important role in mediating between the US and Iran, helping achieve a ceasefire, and emphasized pride in the country’s leadership.
The assembly reaffirmed that political dialogue was the only path to sustainable peace and called for inclusive participation of all stakeholders to ensure regional stability and socio-economic development.
The Assembly introduced the Vagrancy Control and Rehabilitation Amendment Bill 2026 to curb begging, eliminate organized begging mafias, and rehabilitate needy individuals.
Provincial Law Minister, Aftab Alam presented the bill and said that under the proposed law, strict action would be taken against organized or forced begging networks. Professional beggars would face punishment, while rehabilitation centers would be established to train and support needy individuals, including children. Severe penalties were proposed for those exploiting children for begging.
The bill proposed up to one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 50,000 for repeated begging, and up to three years imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 400,000 for organized begging. The aim was to help beggars become productive and respectable members of society.
In line with the announcement of the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the provincial assembly session has been scheduled to be held on Wednesday at Imran Khan cricket Stadium. This would be the first time in the province’s history that an assembly session wold be held at a public venue where citizens can watch proceedings live.
Officials said the move was intended to increase public awareness and transparency. The Speaker said that this step would reduce the gap between the public and their representatives and strengthen democratic accountability.
A plan has been prepared to increase the salaries and benefits of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. Instead of legislation, authority to increase salaries would be given to the Assembly’s Finance Committee.
After approval, the committee would be able to increase salaries without formal legislation. The proposed amendments would come into effect after approval from the provincial cabinet and assembly.
Members of both government and opposition criticized electricity and gas load-shedding and demanded that the Chief Executive Officer of WAPDA and the Managing Director Sui Gas be summoned for a briefing.
MPAs highlighted that despite large gas production in Kohat, people were facing severe shortages, long hours of electricity load-shedding, and high prices. Issues such as transformer theft and poor management were also raised.
The assembly also discussed issues related to Mardan Medical Complex and the delayed Manchar Dam project. Concerns were raised about limited OPD services, causing hardship for poor patients.
The government responded that the issue would be referred to the policy board. Regarding dams, officials said delays were due to legal disputes over land acquisition.
In another discussion, it was stated that negligence by SNGPL caused a fire incident near Hattar, resulting in the loss of eight lives. The government promised compensation and demanded accountability for those responsible.
