PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Mar, 2026) The 10th meeting of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Committee, chaired by Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Muhammad Sohail Afridi on Tuesday reviewed key development initiatives and approved a proposal to convert municipal waste into fuel in Peshawar under the PPP framework.

During a briefing, officials informed the meeting that the waste-to-fuel project would utilize modern technology to convert Peshawar’s solid waste into usable fuel.

Under the plan, advanced material recovery and processing facilities would be established at the Shamshato landfill site to improve waste management.

The briefing highlighted that the project would significantly reduce waste accumulation at landfill sites and help curb environmental pollution.

It is also expected to contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, marking a major step towards environmentally sustainable waste management.

Addressing the meeting, the chief minister said the initiative would help reduce reliance on imported coal, save valuable foreign exchange and create new employment opportunities.

He added that Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) produced from waste would be used as an alternative to coal in the cement industry, benefiting the industrial sector.

He further noted that the project would generate additional economic gains through carbon credits and industrial utilization, while also playing a key role in environmental protection and overall economic improvement.

The CM said the waste-to-fuel initiative would lay the foundation for a modern and sustainable waste management system in Peshawar and contribute to making the city cleaner and greener.

The meeting also decided that a private company’s proposal would be floated in the market to ensure transparency and competitiveness, enabling selection of the best possible option.
