KU’s intl conference emphasizes AI, modern technology, global collaboration

KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Apr, 2026) The Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, stated that information technology has now expanded into nearly every sphere of life, with each sector working toward its own specific mission and objectives.

He cautioned that extraordinary care is required in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as irresponsible application can generate misleading, unethical, and even fake content, including serious issues such as false representation of individuals.

He was addressing the closing ceremony of the fourth International Conference on Information Science and Communication Technology, organized by the KU’s Department of Computer Science in collaboration with Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Sindh Higher Education Commission.

The event was held on Thursday at the KU’s International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences Auditorium.

The KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi emphasized that responsibility and awareness are essential in AI usage. He noted that AI is playing a significant role in healthcare, assisting in diagnosis, treatment, and patient care, thereby improving quality of life.

He also highlighted AI’s decisive role in modern military strategies and urged Muslim countries to prioritize self-reliance in programming, research, and technology.

Speaking at the event, Malaysia’s Consul General Herman Hardynata Ahmad said universities today are not merely educational institutions but central hubs for research, innovation, and practical solutions.

He stressed the importance of universities in advancing fields such as AI, cybersecurity, and big data, and praised the University of Karachi for hosting a conference that unites global expertise and sets directions for emerging technologies.

He further emphasized the need for sustainable development through collaboration among governments, industries, universities, and youth, while calling for stronger educational cooperation and student exchange programs between Pakistan and Malaysia.

Morocco’s Consul General Mirza Ishtiaq Baig expressed his honor in participating, noting that experts from various countries shared valuable insights on AI and IT that will benefit students and researchers.

He highlighted Morocco’s rapidly growing IT sector and invited Pakistani experts and investors to participate in upcoming IT exhibitions, while confirming ongoing work on student exchange programs.

Ziauddin University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Ali Sheikh underscored that the progress of Muslim nations lies in modern education, science, and technology.

Ethiopia’s Honorary Consul General Ibrahim Khalid Tawab remarked that modern technology is transforming lifestyles, trade, and global relations, reducing distances and enabling problem-solving across borders.

He noted that internet of Things and big data have become the new language of diplomacy, and emphasized the importance of research collaboration for socio-economic development.

IEEE’s representative Professor Dr Shahid Sheikh highlighted the organization’s global role, mentioning that over 500,000 professionals are IEEE’s global members.

He noted that Pakistan’s Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad sections are active, with Karachi being the largest, and explained how IEEE provides students and researchers with opportunities for international conferences, funding, and professional development.

KU’s Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Dr Bilquees Gul, shared that the conference featured detailed discussions on modern trends and research in information science, computing technology, AI, data science, cybersecurity, and cloud computing — all of which have now become fundamental drivers of the global economy.

The Chancellor of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, Akbar Ali Khan, concluded the session by stressing that such conferences are essential to meet the demands of modern technology and remain aligned with global progress.

Earlier, KU’s Chairman of the Department of Computer Science, Professor Dr Sadiq Ali Khan, delivered the welcome address, outlining the objectives of the conference and briefing participants on the research papers and scientific advancements presented.
