ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th Apr, 2026) Lawmakers from both treasury and opposition benches in the National Assembly on Wednesday lauded Pakistan’s “pivotal and positive role” in facilitating ceasefire efforts between Iran and the United States, terming it a major diplomatic achievement that elevated the country’s global stature.
Taking part in the discussion, lawmakers across political divides described the ceasefire as a welcome development and expressed optimism that it would evolve into a permanent peace arrangement in the region.
They emphasized that Pakistan’s balanced and responsible diplomacy had contributed significantly to de-escalating tensions.
Shahida Akhtar Ali said wars were not won merely by weapons but by determination, adding that Pakistan had played a “key and constructive role” in steering the situation towards peace. She extended congratulations to the national leadership and all those who contributed to achieving this positive development, saying it had sent a strong message not only to the Pakistani nation but also to the international community.
MQM MNA Ameen ul Haque said April 8 would be written in golden words in Pakistan’s history as the country successfully contributed to facilitating a temporary ceasefire through effective diplomacy and national unity.
He said the entire nation expressed solidarity with Iran as well as Saudi Arabia, appreciating the latter’s restraint and patience in a sensitive situation, and termed this unity a positive sign for regional peace and harmony.
Highlighting Pakistan’s diplomatic history, he said the country had previously played a key role in bringing nations closer, recalling efforts that helped improve relations between China and the United States decades ago. He said the recent development marked another high point in Pakistan’s diplomatic journey.
He appreciated the role of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar for their efforts in achieving this progress.
He noted that positive developments were already being reflected in economic indicators, expressing hope that the leadership would continue to demonstrate wisdom and also provide relief to the public by reviewing rising petroleum prices.
Taking part in the debate, MNA Hameed Hussain said Pakistan’s role had been “highly important and constructive,” adding that hosting negotiations in Islamabad reflected the country’s balanced and peace-oriented foreign policy, which had established it as an effective mediator on the global stage.
He remarked that the recent conflict should not be viewed merely as a war but also as a lesson, highlighting the resilience shown by the people involved.
He expressed hope that the ceasefire would succeed and eventually lead to lasting peace in the region.
MNA Naeema Kishwar Khan said Pakistan’s diplomatic success had proven wrong those who had claimed that the country would become isolated internationally. “Today, it is evident that Pakistan has emerged as a significant and responsible player on the global stage,” she added.
The lawmaker said the efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar deserved appreciation, as achieving such progress under challenging circumstances was not an easy task.
Parliamentary Secretary Asiya Ishaq said Pakistan had emerged as a strong and stable country on the global stage, turning challenging circumstances into an opportunity to promote peace.
She emphasized that the country’s leadership had acted with wisdom and foresight, enabling Pakistan to emerge with enhanced dignity and respect internationally.
Asiya Ishaq said Pakistan’s role in promoting dialogue and reducing tensions reflected its commitment to peace, adding that such efforts would continue to strengthen its position as a responsible nation in the comity of nations.
Several lawmakers strongly condemned Israeli actions in Gaza, Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran, while calling for collective efforts by Muslim countries to ensure lasting peace and stability. They stressed that unity among Muslim nations could prevent further conflicts and strengthen regional harmony.
PTI MNA Afzal Marwat appreciated the opposition, particularly Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, for postponing its planned public gathering, terming it a “gesture of political maturity” by prioritizing national interest over political considerations.
Members including Iqbal Afridi and Syed Abdul Kadir Gillani praised the collective political consensus, noting that all parties stood united for Pakistan’s global image and peace efforts. They described April 8 as a significant day in the country’s diplomatic history.
MNAs including Aliya Kamran, Nisar Jutt, Syed Hafeezuddin, Farah Khan, Naveed Ahmed, Fateh Ullah Khan, Sehar Kamran and others also expressed their views.
Concluding the debate, the lawmakers reiterated that Pakistan’s leadership—both political and military—deserved appreciation for steering the country through a critical juncture and contributing to regional peace, while calling for continued unity and a forward-looking approach in addressing both domestic and international challenges.
