Legislative panel deliberates on amendments to provincial laws

PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Apr, 2026) A crucial meeting of the Legislative Committee, comprising four agenda items and chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Minister for Law, Human Rights and Parliamentary Affairs, Aftab Alam, was held in Peshawar.

The meeting undertook detailed deliberations on matters relating to amendments and reforms in various provincial laws.

Besides, Advisor to KP CM on Finance Muzammil Aslam, Secretary Law Department and Additional Advocate General, officials from the Departments of Social Welfare, board of Revenue, Health, Law, Transport, as well as other relevant departments.

During the session, comprehensive discussions were held on proposed amendments to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women Act, 2016; draft amendments to the Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1965 (regarding educational institution vehicles); the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa River Protection (Amendment) Act, 2026; and the KP Medical Teaching Institutions Reforms Act, 2025.

Under the first agenda, proposed amendments to Section 15A of the Women’s Status Commission Amendment Bill were reviewed. Under the third agenda, proposed amendments to the KP River Protection Ordinance were also examined, with various opinions presented regarding changes to Section 11.

The Law Minister proposed bifurcating issues related to river encroachments and violations along canal banks. He also emphasized the inclusion of 15 notified rivers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the schedule of the ordinance.

Under the fourth agenda, deliberations were held on necessary amendments to various provisions of the Provincial Motor Vehicle Ordinance to ensure the safe use of vehicles by private educational institutions and to provide safeguards against potential damages. Aftab Alam also stressed the importance of incorporating stormwater drains into the proposed legislation as a backup mechanism.

Addressing the meeting, the Law Minister stated that the government is committed to modernizing the legislative process in order to promote public welfare.

He emphasized that priority is being given to the protection of women’s rights, environmental improvement, regulation of transport for educational institutions, and reforms in the health sector so that better services can be provided to the public.

He directed the concerned authorities to finalize all proposed amendments at the earliest and present them before the provincial cabinet and assembly to further accelerate and strengthen the legislative process.

The meeting also underscored that transparency, mutual consultation, and public interest must remain paramount in all legislative efforts.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the minister for law reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the rule of law in the province and improving governance through institutional reforms.
