LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st May, 2026) The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday directed all relevant departments to take immediate and effective measures ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, warning that unusually heavy rains could cause large-scale destruction if timely arrangements are not ensured.

During the hearing of smog-related petitions, Justice Shahid Karim observed that forecasts indicate above-normal rainfall this year and stressed the need for urgent preparedness to avoid urban flooding and other disasters.

The court also ordered authorities to continue action against sugar mills that have failed to install wastewater treatment plants. The court remarked that mills failing to comply within the stipulated timeframe should not be allowed to operate.

During the proceedings, the court sought a detailed report from the Water and Sanitation Agency regarding the installation of water meters across the city.

Member of the Environmental Commission Syed Kamal Haider submitted a report regarding transplanted trees.

The court was further informed that the Lahore Development Authority and the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency were planning to install recharge wells for rainwater conservation. The court noted that recharge wells are vital for preserving underground water reserves.

Counsel for the Environment Department informed the court that action had already been initiated against sugar mills that failed to install wastewater treatment plants, while the mills had been granted time until May 31 to comply with the directions.

Law officers representing the Punjab government, along with officials from the Lahore Development Authority, Parks and Horticulture Authority, Environment Department and other relevant agencies, also appeared before the court.

The hearing was later adjourned until after the Eid holidays.
