ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Jul, 2026) Former president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and former ambassador Sardar Masood Khan on Thursday welcomed the Election Commission's decision to hold phased elections in AJK, describing it as a balanced democratic approach under the prevailing security situation, while urging political parties to ensure responsible conduct during the election campaign.
“The democratic continuity must be maintained while ensuring peace, security and public confidence in the electoral process,” he said in a statement.
He called upon all political parties to exercise restraint during the election campaign and avoid rhetoric that could deepen internal divisions or provide opportunities for hostile propaganda against Pakistan.
Referring to recent political developments in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, he said constitutional and legislative issues should be resolved through the elected Legislative Assembly in accordance with democratic norms and institutional procedures.

Commenting on regional developments, he said Pakistan should continue to play a leading diplomatic role in preventing the ongoing Iran–United States conflict from escalating into a broader regional war.
He stressed that proactive diplomacy and regional engagement were vital for promoting peace and stability in the region.
