The event put spotlight on urgent challenge of radicalization in online spaces and role of media literacy in countering it
GUJRAT: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-March 20th, 2026) Media literacy is key to curbing digital violent extremism, said the scholars at a seminar held at Hafiz Hayat Campus of the University of Gujrat the other day.
The one-day seminar, titled "Open Dialogue on the Causes of Digital Violent Extremism and Strategies for its Prevention", was hosted by the Hayatian Legal Forum of the school of Law, University of Gujrat, as a part of the forum's ongoing academic and awareness series. The event put the spotlight on the urgent challenge of radicalization in online spaces and the role of media literacy in countering it.
Dr. Muhammad Yousaf, Associate Professor at the Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS) and Director Media at the University of Gujrat, served as the resource person. He explained how social media platforms, online communities and algorithm‑driven information flows can amplify extremist narratives.
Violent extremism, he noted, is often fuelled by ideological manipulation, misinformation, identity politics and psychological vulnerabilities among youth.
" In a world of mediated realities," he stressed, "citizens must be equipped with critical media literacy skills to resist misinformation, disinformation and propaganda."
The chairperson of the School of Law, Rao Qasim Idrees, elaborated on the motives behind violent extremism and the exploitation of digital networks by extremist groups for recruitment and mobilization. He emphasized the need for a multi-dimensional response involving legal frameworks, education, public awareness and community engagement.
The seminar concluded with interactive discussion, where students and faculty raised questions on the legal, social and media dimensions of extremism. Participants appreciated Dr. Yousaf's insights and practical recommendations, while the chairperson expressed gratitude to all contributors and highlighted the forum's commitment to fostering peace-building, critical thinking and informed dialogue.
A large number of faculty members, researchers and students attended, making the event a vibrant platform for academic exchange on one of the most pressing issues of the digital age.
