RAWALPINDI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 4th Jun, 2026) President of Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Society (PESS), General (R) Abdul Qayyum Malik on Thursday said that journalism is the fourth pillar of the state and responsible, unbiased reporting is essential to convey facts to the public.

Talking to media, he lauded Pakistani media role in effectively countering Indian propaganda during recent national engagements, and said it projected Pakistan’s stance at the global level, enhancing the country’s image.

He clarified that the PESS is a non-political platform working to promote national unity, patriotism and Pakistani identity. He added that in response to Indian threats, millions of retired soldiers across the country expressed full solidarity with the armed forces, sending a clear message of unity for national defence.

He said that India has never wholeheartedly accepted Pakistan’s existence since its birth and continues efforts to assert regional dominance. However, he added, Pakistan’s political and military leadership demonstrated wisdom and foresight during recent challenges, while the nation showed exemplary unity.

Referring to Afghanistan, he maintained that the Afghan people are close to Pakistan’s heart and improved bilateral relations are the need of the hour. He regretted that Afghan soil is being used against Pakistan but stressed that Pakistan cannot afford a new front, calling for enhanced trade, diplomatic engagement and border cooperation.

He urged the Federal government to fix the minimum pension of ex-servicemen at Rs. 37,500, noting that some veterans who fought in two wars are receiving only Rs. 14,000, which needs revision in view of current economic conditions.

On the issue of new provinces, he said their creation is necessary for good governance, public facilitation and fair distribution of powers, but requires broad consensus among political parties and stakeholders.

Chief Media Coordinator of the dociety, Aziz Ahmed Awan, said that media plays a crucial role in national stability, unity and projecting Pakistan’s positive image. He added that under the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan has achieved significant successes on defence, diplomatic and peace fronts.
