MIRPURKHAS, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 5th Jun, 2026) A meeting of the Commissioner Committee was held under Divisional Commissioner Mirpurkhas Shahmir Khan Bhutto to review preparedness and arrangements for the upcoming monsoon rains.
The Commissioner directed all concerned officers to resolve potential issues in advance and complete necessary arrangements before the season begins.
He emphasized that effective measures should be taken for immediate drainage of rainwater from low-lying areas to protect residents from difficulties, adding that the Government of Sindh and the divisional administration are committed to minimizing public hardship.
Director Nara Canal Area Water Board Shan Mallah informed the meeting that the Jamrao Canal originates from the Rohri Canal with a carrying capacity of 13,600 cusecs, supplying water for drinking and agriculture up to tail-end areas.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>Executive Engineer LBOD Mirpurkhas Najeeb Ahmed Shah said the Left Bank Outfall Drain was built in 1986 to drain 4,600 cusecs, with a maximum capacity of 7,000 cusecs, but 12,000 cusecs passed through during the 2022 rains, severely affecting Mirpurkhas, particularly Jhuddo and Naukot.
Following the 2022 rains, the Government of Sindh strengthened embankments of the spinal drain, RD structures, and natural waterways to improve drainage, with additional work continuing where required.
The Commissioner instructed all Deputy Commissioners of the division to hold meetings with relevant departmental officers regarding monsoon preparedness and to inspect ongoing drainage works to ensure timely emergency response.
The meeting was attended by Additional Commissioner-I Subhash Chandar, Deputy Commissioner Nawab Sameer Hussain Laghari, and other senior officials.
