The PCB chairman hints at possible return of crowds to HBL PSL 2026 matches
KARACHI: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-April 14th, 2026) Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Monday denied reports circulating on social media claiming that he could replace India’s Jay Shah as the next chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Speculation had been circulating earlier this week suggesting that Naqvi, who also heads the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), might take on an additional global cricket leadership role. However, he rejected the claims when questioned by reporters in Karachi.
Speaking to the media at the National Bank Stadium following the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 clash between Peshawar Zalmi and Multan Sultans, Naqvi made it clear that the rumours held no substance.
He said there was no truth to discussions linking him with the ICC top position, adding that such reports were unfounded.
During the briefing, the PCB chairman also said he would once again raise the issue of crowd attendance with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, expressing hope that fans could soon be allowed back into PSL stadiums.
He emphasized that the board wants spectators to return to the venues to restore the lively atmosphere of the tournament.
At the same time, Naqvi pointed out that any decision regarding public attendance must consider the wider regional security and geopolitical situation, particularly ongoing tensions in the middle East.
The PCB had earlier decided to conduct PSL matches without spectators as part of austerity measures supported by the government amid the regional situation. The tournament was also limited to Karachi and Lahore to reduce travel and logistical arrangements.
Following the decision, franchise representatives urged authorities to reconsider, arguing that fans are an essential part of the league’s identity and overall appeal. They appealed to the Federal and provincial leadership to allow stadium attendance once again.
While reaffirming his intention to push for the return of crowds, Naqvi clarified that the PSL schedule would remain unchanged amid given situation of energy crisis.
