Experts warn that the monsoon across South Asia, including Pakistan, could be weaker than usual this year as the El Niño phenomenon is expected to return.

The Pakistani Meteorological Department is reporting an El Niño event developing during the summer months and very possibly intensifying by either late August or early September. PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir Zaigham advised that if the El Niño intensifies into “Super El Nino” it would not only drop the chances of rainfall but would also affect global temperature levels for some time.

There is a 50-60% potential for an El Niño event to develop between July and September. If it builds in strength, it will have a significant impact on our world in 2027, with the potential to create one of the hottest years on record. El Niño and La Niña are global atmospheric and oceanic systems originating in the Pacific Ocean, with global effects on temperature and precipitation.

Studies show that a strong El Niño could create severe weather patterns throughout the world, including drought and changing rain patterns in several areas.

The province of Sindh in Pakistan is also experiencing high temperatures and dry weather. Temperatures in Karachi are projected to be as high as 36°C, and the humidity will be very high in the early mornings, with temperatures projected to be at least 38°C and the overnight low temperatures not expected to fall below 24-26°C.
