Initiative aims to improve accuracy, speed of criminal investigations

LAHORE:
The Punjab Police and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) on Tuesday formalised an information-sharing agreement aimed at strengthening crime control, improving investigation standards and promoting technology-driven policing across the province. The signing ceremony was held at the Central Police Office on February 17. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Abdul Kareem attended as chief guest, while NADRA's Chief Project Officer at the Directorate Headquarters, Rehman Qamar, participated along with senior officials. The agreement was signed by DIG Information Technology Mansoorul Haq Rana on behalf of Punjab Police and Chief Project Officer Rehman Qamar representing NADRA. Under the framework, NADRA will provide a range of identity verification and biometric services to the provincial police. These include fingerprint matching, biometric authentication, access to Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) records, family tree data and verification of Family Registration Certificates (FRCs). A Punjab Police spokesperson said the collaboration is expected to improve the accuracy and speed of criminal investigations by enabling more reliable identification of suspects and reducing delays in verification processes. Integration of NADRA's database services with police operations will also assist in tracing proclaimed offenders, confirming detainees' identities and facilitating lawful arrests. Officials added that the agreement supports broader community policing objectives by enhancing transparency and improving service delivery at police stations through real-time identity verification tools. During the ceremony, DIG IT Mansoorul Haq Rana briefed participants on the technical and operational aspects of the partnership, describing it as part of ongoing efforts to modernise policing infrastructure. IGP Abdul Kareem appreciated NADRA's cooperation, calling the agreement a strategic step toward strengthening institutional capacity and addressing evolving security challenges through enhanced inter-agency coordination. Punjab Police authorities said the implementation of services will be carried out in phases, in accordance with legal protocols and data protection regulations to ensure secure use of shared information.
