Over 124,000 police personnel to perform Muharram security duties in Punjab

LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Jun, 2026) Punjab Police have finalized a comprehensive security plan for Muharram-ul-Haram,

with more than 124,000 police officers and personnel to be deployed across the

province to ensure the peaceful observance of religious gatherings and mourning

processions.

According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, security arrangements had been completed

on the directions of Inspector General (IG) Punjab Abdul Kareem. During the first ten days

of Muharram, security would be provided to 47,280 religious gatherings and mourning

processions across the province, including Lahore. These include 37,868 majalis and

9,412 mourning processions.

The spokesperson said over 41,200 police personnel would be deployed for the security

of majalis, while more than 73,400 officers and personnel would perform duties along

procession routes. Another 9,500 personnel would conduct patrolling around religious

gatherings, procession routes and other important and sensitive locations.

IG Punjab Abdul Kareem said an enhanced and comprehensive security strategy had

been devised for Muharram, with the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Branch,

Traffic Police, Dolphin Squad, Police Response Unit (PRU) and field formations working

in coordination to maintain law and order. Processions and majalis would be continuously

monitored through Safe Cities cameras.

He directed police officers to maintain close coordination with Peace Committees and

organizers of religious events to address issues proactively.

He said no procession or

majlis would be allowed outside designated routes and venues, while strict implementation

of Section 144 and the Loudspeaker Act would be ensured.

The IG Punjab said the movement of individuals placed on the Fourth schedule would be

closely monitored, while all government-prescribed security SOPs, including restrictions

on speech and movement where applicable, would be enforced.

He further said CCTV cameras, metal detectors and walk-through gates would be installed

at sensitive locations. Strict legal action would be taken against those involved in spreading

hate material, wall chalking and displaying unlawful banners and posters.

The spokesperson said a ban on pillion riding would remain in force on the 9th and 10th

of Muharram, except for senior citizens, women and law enforcement personnel. Muharram

Control Rooms would remain operational in all districts and maintain round-the-clock

coordination with the Central Control Room at the Central Police Office.

The IG Punjab urged religious scholars and community leaders of all schools of thought

to promote harmony, tolerance and brotherhood during Muharram, stressing that any

attempt by anti-state elements to disrupt peace would be dealt with firmly through collective

vigilance and cooperation.
