Overworked drivers put lives at risk in south Punjab

MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 5th Apr, 2026) Increasing working hours of public transport drivers in South Punjab are raising concerns about road safety, health, and family wellbeing, though many continue to cope under difficult economic conditions.

A large number of bus, wagon, and rickshaw drivers in Multan and nearby districts spend 12 to 16 hours daily on roads, often with limited rest. The trend is mainly linked to rising expenses and commission-based earnings, making longer shifts a necessity rather than a choice.

According to health practitioners including Dr Waqas and Dr Fakhar, fatigue can affect driving performance by reducing concentration and slowing reaction time. “A tired driver can unintentionally put lives at risk.

They also point to growing medical concerns among drivers. Long duration sitting, irregular meals, and stress are contributing to issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart problems. The doctors suggest that regular breaks and better routines could help reduce these risks.
